United Way opens Northland's second Success by 6 center
Maddy Roberts, a 4-year-old preschooler at Gracemore Elementary School, knew exactly what was about the happen with the red ribbon hung across the doorway at room A10.
“You're going to snip it open,” she said.
The Northland's second Success by 6 center opened Sept. 18 at the school, and Roberts was ready to play with and learn from the roomful of educational toys and material.
success by 6 is a United Way program designed to provide families with the materials they need to prepare children for kindergarten. Aimed specifically at low-income households, participants can borrow brand new toys and books that all have an educational facet.
It's as much about teaching parents how to be good educators in the home as it is about helping children, said Terry Harrison, a Harley-Davidson employee and vice chairman of United Way Northland's operating board.

The first rev of a Harley-Davidson
Did you know motorcycles have been on the road for over 100 years?
The first one was invented in 1867 by Sylvester Howard Roper. The American creation was powered by a two-cylinder steam engine.
The first gas-engine motorcycle followed 20 years later and was invented in Germany by Gottlieb Daimler. His bike had a wooden frame with a four-stroke internal-combustion engine attached. Such engines were a fairly new development. They were only designed in 1876, by an engineer named Nicolaus August Otto.
While Daimler and Roper moved on to work on the automobile, there were others out there that continued to tinker with the idea of a motorbike. A few of these tinkers were William Harley and his two friends, Arthur and Walter Davidson, who launched the Harley-Davidson Motor Company in 1903.

Ford Introduces 2008 Harley-Davidson F-Series Super Duty and F-150
The 2008 Ford Harley-Davidson F-Series Super Duty comes to showrooms this fall. For 2008, for the first time, it shares the same design as the Harley-Davidson F-150. This is the 11th model to come out of the alliance with Harley-Davidson that started in 1999. Ford says this latest version "draws its design theme from the special-edition 105th Anniversary Harley-Davidson motorcycle," which is noteworthy for its Vintage Copper paint.
The 2008 Ford Harley-Davidson F-Series Super Duty comes in either a black monochromatic exterior paint with a Vintage Copper stripe or a black and Vintage Copper two-tone paint scheme. Ford said the truck is available with the 6.4-liter Power Stroke diesel.

2008 Harley-Davidson Edition Ford F-Series
The new for '08 Ford Harley-Davidson F-Series Super Duty is what you've come to expect after walking ten times around this dual-branded block. Harley owners not willing to ride in the rain (we can't blame them) and others that like to emulate the leather- and chrome-clad image have purchased over 60,000 of the things in the last eight years. This time around it's a celebration of the Pennsylvania-based biking outfit's 105th anniversary, coinciding with Ford's own celebration of building cars for just as many years.
Paint schemes are inspired by Harley's special-edition 105th anniversary motorcycle and come in one of two flavors: either a two-tone, black and "Vintage Copper" combo or an all black body with copper pin striping. According to Brad Richards, the Ford/Harley brand manager, the chrome side vents and grille are inspired by the heat diffusers found on the cylinder heads of the V-Twin, and the 20-inch polished wheels bring the theme home.

Woman killed in motorcycle wreck
One woman was killed and a man injured when their motorcycle collided with a car Monday in Des Moines.
The accident happened about 8:30 p.m. on Pacific Highway South and South 226th Street, officials with South King Fire and Rescue reported.
The motorcycle, a 2007 Harley-Davidson, was northbound on Pacific when it collided with a southbound Kia sedan after the Kia driver made a left turn in front of the motorcycle, Des Moines police Sgt. Bob Collins said.
The impact was enough to send the Kia spinning around, he said.
The couple on the motorcycle were thrown at least 75 feet. The woman, 49, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The 50-year-old man driving the motorcycle was taken to Harborview Medical Center, but his condition was unavailable.

Toyota vs. GM vs. Harley-Davidson
In 2006 GM produced about 9 million vehicles worldwide, about the same as Toyota; and Ford produced about 6.6 million vehicles. And yet look at the whopping difference in market value in the graph above between Toyota ($208 billion) and GM (only $19.5 billion). Is that what $51 billion in health care liabilites does to a company's market value? Look for a prolonged strike to erode GM's market value even further.
And consider that motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson's market value of $12 billion is not far behind GM and Ford, even though it only manufactures about 300,000 motorcycles annually!

Guarantee Your Seat in the C-Suite: Go Ahead, Get Emotional!
Did Harley Davidson create the desire for rebellion and the feeling of freedom that comes from conquering the open road? Did Starbucks create the desire for a sense of sophistication or for people to feel like they are part of a community?
Of course not! Harley Davidson and Starbucks simply found wonderfully resonant ways to tap into these deep emotional currents that course through people's veins. However, it is important to remember that everyone does not have the same emotional imperatives. That is why some people buy a Suzuki bike and many people prefer to buy their coffee at Dunkin Donuts. That is how great branding works—companies find ways to connect with the emotional drivers that move their specific target audiences.
When you're walking down the grocery store aisle, have you ever listened to the tiny voices in the back of your head that are asking questions like, what does this product say about me as a mother? What does this product say about my status? Do I prefer to be irreverent or traditional? Am I frugal or do I prefer to be decadent?

More women bikers change the face of motorcycling
When Barb Zeigler of Reno began riding motorcycles on the streets of Los Angeles 33 years ago, few women held the handlebars. The female's job was to sit behind the male who drove.
"Back in those days, when a woman rode a motorcycle, it was looked down upon," Zeigler said. "I was called a lesbian. I was called all kinds of stuff."
What does Zeigler call herself today? "Motorcycle grandmama," the 55-year-old Zeigler said.
Women now account for 10 percent of motorcycle sales nationally, an increase of 36 percent since 1998 and are the fastest growing segment of the motorcycle buying population, according to a June 23 article in the Dallas Morning News.
Debbie Groves, 51, of Gridley, Calif., drove her 1989 Harley-Davidson Heritage Soft Tail to this year's Street Vibrations and thinks there are more women riders this year than last year. Same thing at the big motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S.D., earlier this year.

Want to be a biker? All you need is here
Bring your loose change because we're going to spend some money.
Several credit cards would also be helpful, along with a fat wallet. Especially if you're going to buy one of the motorcycles made by Ron Simms. They start at $35,000. That's for the "Little Bomber" model.
Street Vibrations, taking place this week in downtown Reno and at other local venues, is a celebration of motorcycles. You can see and hear them everywhere. It's also a shopping event, with all things motorcycle for sale, from a bike by Simms to a $100 tattoo by Rob Jones.
North Virginia Street is the main mall.
You can start at one end with nothing and finish at the other with everything you need to be a biker.
Leather jacket. Helmet. Bandanna. Boots. A lawyer.
"You can find just about anything," said Simms, who's been building custom bikes at his shop in Hayward, Calif., for 30 years.

Chasing Value: Will Harley-Davidson (HOG) fade like Levi Strauss?
Yesterday I posted Chasing Value: Harley-Davidson (HOG) looking on down the road and actually bought a few shares. Late in the day I received a comment from one of our frequent readers whose opinions I have grown to respect, although he can be a little harsh at times. This reader raised some interesting points I thought worth some consideration. He wrote:

I also think you're making a classic mistake when you speculate by saying "if it returns to its former level within the next few years."

Set Your Bike Apart With Custom Motorcycle Paint Job
If you're tired of having a motorcycle that looks like everyone else's, you need a custom motorcycle paint job. You'll be the envy of other bikers when you have a motorcycle that stands apart from all the rest. Make your bike reflect your personality and who you are.
Custom paint is one of the most noticeable things on a motorcycle. It instantly sets your bike apart from the thousands of others on the road. Sure, you can add custom wheels or other items to your bike. But, a custom paint job makes your bike more noticeable than most custom accessories. Graphics or a custom paint color will also reflect your personality in a way that custom parts never can.

Harley Davidson - How Do I Hate Thee
We in the D.C. area just go treated to another tiresome rolling Geritol commercial. Thousands of RUBs [Rich Urban Bikers] came to the area on their Harley Davidson motorcycles, polluting the area with the sounds of troubled G.I. tracts.
Here's why I hate Harleys and the dweebs who ride them:
1. For encouraging dentists to wear leather.
2. For giving away a case of DentuCreme with every new hog.
3. For disenfranchising real tough guys. The true scum and lowlifes that made Harley fearsome either can't afford them or are ashamed to ride them. [Maybe they can become part of a protected class.]

Chasing Value: Harley-Davidson (HOG) looking on down the road
The last time I bought Harley-Davidson (NYSE: HOG) I paid $18 a share and it is one of our oldest holdings. Today, I finally bought some more. I probably share way too much personal information with readers of BloggingStocks but I just can't bring myself to suggest to people something I would not do myself, and in any case my readership is not large enough to move the market (nor is the few shares we acquired.) Too many advisers are promoting stocks they themselves would not touch with a ten foot pole.
Harley is near a 52-week low of $46.15, closing yesterday at $48.59. Management trimmed production levels recently to better balance with demand after years of very healthy increases. It was bound to overshoot demand at some point and it is wise to moderate production. HOG had reached its 52-week high of $75.87 last November (2006). I am not looking for miracles with this purchase.

?Harley-Davidson: At Last? as presented in Hartley?s Marketing Mistakes and Successes presents the circumstances around HD?s near collapse and since rinse to near mythic success. This case is a great example of marketing myopia; HD saw them-selves as ?full-size motorcycles? manufactures, not in the transportation, or even the entertainment industry. They believed no one bought motorcycles for transportation, but rather for leisure time use. Like the automotive industry of the time, Harley-Davidson thought its cure customers would buy its products versus those of any of its major competitors, chiefly because they were all foreign. Interesting enough this was true, HD annual unit sales never changed; they just did not grow with either the market or even the population. In the 1950s motorcycle sales were approximately 50,000 units annually, of which HD had 70%. By 1971, there were nearly 4 million motorcycles registered in the US and HD market share had dropped to 5%. Harley-Davidson was founded in 1903 by four men in a wooden shed experimenting with the internal combustion engine. By the beginning of the?60s, HD had practically wiped out all of its domestic competitors. Its motorcycles were used by nearly every police department in America. This was soon to change. Harley-Davidson (HOG) NewsBite - Harley-Davidson Rallying on Fed Decision
Harley-Davidson Inc. (HOG) opened at 48.25. So far today, the stock has hit a low of 48.20 and a high of 49.40. HOG is now trading at 49.07, up 1.29 (2.67%). The stock hit its 52 week high of 75.87 in November and set its 52 week low of 46.15 in September. HOG has been sharply and steadily fallen for most of this year. Harley-Davidson shares have been rallying today with the entire consumer goods market, following the larger than expected 50 basis point rate cut by the Federal Reserve yesterday afternoon. The report eased investors' credit concerns, helping retailers who sell vehicles like Harley-Davidson. Technical indicators for the stock are bearish and steady while S&P gives HOG a negative 2 STARS (out of 5) sell rating. If you’re looking for a hedged play on this stock, consider a November bull-put credit spread below the $42.50 range. HOG stock could fall up to 13.4% before expiration and this position would still be profitable. [RHF- Seven Summits Strategic Investments NewsBite]

No Unemployment Checks
Thousands of Harley Davidson workers who went on strike earlier this year will not get unemployment checks.
Last February, workers at the plant in York County walked the picket lines for nearly three weeks. Now a state panel says those same workers are not entitled to unemployment for that time.
Under Pennsylvania law unemployment compensation is not allowed when workers are on strike, but is allowed when they are locked out.

Motorcycle association hosts rockin’ party
This summer, the Cordillera Motorcycle Association had its annual “Rider Cup” blowout at the Summit Course in Cordillera.
Three days and evenings of fun were in store for all who participated, with the emphasis on golf, fine food and good wine, rather than trekking around the country on their motorcycles.
The first day, Senior PGA pro Jim Colbert tooled around the course handing out free shots (the type with the golf club, not a shot glass) to improve everyone’s final score. On several different holes, a selection of breakfast items were served, from custom-made omelets to Belgian waffles and Bloody Marys. The emphasis wasn’t on the quality of golf, but the fun.

Harley-Davidsons back on the road in Thailand
After a 10-year absence of an authorised dealer, Harley-Davidson Motor of the US has appointed Harley-Davidson of Bangkok as its sole authorised dealer for sales and service in Thailand. The company will also carry parts, accessories and general merchandise.
"Our plan is to reintroduce Harley-Davidson premium motorcycles to the Thai market," said Bob Guthrie, 60, managing director of Harley-Davidson of Bangkok. Guthrie has ridden Harley-Davidsons since he was 15.
"I love Thailand. I also love the freedom and the riding in Thailand, and I would like to share these experiences with other people," Guthrie said. "I've been in Thailand for 12 years. In the past few years, large motorcycles have become more popular in Thailand, and this trend will continue in the future. Our aim is to maintain Harley-Davidson as the leader in the Thai market."

Harley suppliers to absorb production pause, but questions remain
Harley-Davidson Inc. will shut down its Springettsbury Township factory the week of Nov. 26 amid sluggish sales.
The company's Kansas City, Mo., plant and three Wisconsin facilities will also be closed.
In York County, the unplanned shutdown amounts to four days because employees are off for the start of deer season on Monday anyway, said Tom Boger, a leader of local lodge 175 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
Local Harley suppliers said the impact on them would be minimal.

2003 Harley-Davidson Road Glide - Pick Of The Pen
I bought this bike in August 2003 to replace my stolen '02 FLHT. My Uncle Kebo and I both had anniversary bikes-he just took a different turn and broke his bike down to the frame, then repainted and chromed it.
I said I would never paint my bike unless it was to redo the anniversary colors. Well, after someone decided to give me some special graphics with a nail, I decided it was time for me to do something about it. I got together with Colby and Matt at Anaheim/Fullerton Harley-Davidson and told them I needed to do something wild to keep up with my Uncle Kebo's anniversary FLHT, which was featured in the May 2005 issue of HOT BIKE. Colby and Matt hooked me up with Danny Martinez at Martinez Custom Paint and Chrome. I remember my brother, Big Punchie, telling me, "They can do a bomb-ass paint job, and you'll be stunned how fast they can do it." Well, I took that thought and ran with it.

2005 Harley-Davidson Dyna Low Rider - High Explosive
You could say that this is really the story of three bikes, not just the one in the photos. It began a couple of years back when Carolina Harley-Davidson created an Arlen Ness Y2K scoot for Morri Irvin. He fell in love with the rubber-mount bike, but as often happens with a great motorcycle, someone made him an offer he couldn't refuse. After the check cleared, Morri found himself with a pile of money but no ride.
This brings us to motorcycle number two. Morri again showed up at Carolina H-D in Gastonia, NC, to replace his beloved Y2K. This go-'round, however, he wanted to try a different rubber-mount chassis. After talking it over with Carolina Harley's Jim Bortles, Morri went with a brand-new (at the time) Dyna Low Rider. Plans were made, and the bike went straight into the shop area like a caterpillar into a cocoon.

Used Harley Davidson motorcycles
If a person can not afford to buy a new Harley Davidson then it is preferable to buy a used one. For some a new model may be similar in terms of price to luxury automobiles. Even if it is not possible to buy a new Harley Davidson bike, it is possible to have a good deal on a used one. However, there are several important things to be kept in mind while buying a used Harley Davidson.
The most important thing to be kept in mind is, knowing the product while buying a used Harley Davidson. Though Harley Davidson is an excellent motorcycle and has been used for over more than 100 years, there are several versions of this favorite motorcycle, each having a unique set of specifications and features. There is a huge amount of information about this motorcycle, as it has been around for a long time and any information regarding this motorcycle can be found on the internet at any point of time.

Mandatory helmet laws bring up same old arguments
Folks in the know expect a dustup sooner or later. Call it the battle between those Born to be Wild and those Born to be Mild.
That prediction comes in the wake of a recommendation this week by a federal agency that all states should pass mandatory helmet laws for motorcyclists.
The recommendation by the National Transportation Safety Board comes a year after 4,810 motorcyclists died in crashes, accounting for more than 10 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities in the United States.
The data is a little moldy in Colorado. But from 1994 to 2005, motorcycle fatalities have gone from 49 to 87. About three-quarters of those killed were not wearing helmets, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Motorcycles Are Dependable
Motorcycles must be leaned in order to turn. Motorcycles from a number of manufacturers now have electric windshields, which raise and lower the windshield with the push of a button to the optimum height for conditions. Motorcycles have a far higher rate of crippling and fatal accidents per unit distance than automobiles. Motorcycles are also exempt from toll bridge charges at some crossings, such as the Severn Bridge and Dartford Crossing. Motorcycles filled the gaps as dependable, reliable vehicles.

Harley Davidson and God
The inventor of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Arthur Davidson, died and went to heaven. At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur, "Since you've been such a good man and your motorcycles have changed the world, your reward is, you can hang out with anyone you want in Heaven."
Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, "I want to hang out with God."
St. Peter took Arthur to the Throne Room, and introduced him to God. God recognized Arthur and commented, "Okay, so you were the one who invented the Harley Davidson motorcycle!"
Arthur said, "Yeah, that's me..."
God commented: "Well, what's the big deal in inventing something that's pretty unstable, makes noise and pollution, and can't run without a road?"
Arthur was apparently embarrassed, but finally spoke, "Excuse me, but aren't you the inventor of woman?"
God said, "Ah, yes." read more

Women driving motorcycle sales
As a child, Genevieve Schmitt would cover her ears when a giant motorcycle with loud pipes blasted past.
Today that big-twin thunder is music to her ears, and she's the one making the noise.
After decades of riding on the backs of bikes often driven by men, women in growing numbers are sliding to the front of the saddle and driving themselves, a movement Schmitt fosters as president of Women Riders Now, based in Livingston, Mont.
Women account for at least 10 percent of motorcyclists in the U.S. today, and they're the fastest-growing segment in the graying $9.7 billion motorcycle industry.

Harley hikes quarterly dividend 20 percent

The company on April 28 lifted the dividend 19 percent, to 25 cents. Harley is boosting payments to shareholders as its profit outlook dims and shares decline. The maker has deepened production cuts and reduced its earnings forecast for 2007 as much as 6 percent. Shares have dropped 33 percent this year through Wednesday. "Despite the production cuts, they've got some confidence on their cash flow for 2008 and beyond," said Joe Hovorka, an analyst for Raymond James & Associates in Atlanta.

Initials excitement: 2008 Harley-Davidson Tourers
To teenage boys, when I was growing up, the letters "FL" stood for something that made us giggle. In the alphabet soup of Harley-Davidson's model list, they signify touring motorcycles.
Whether the bike of your dreams is labelled FLHX (Street Glide), FLHR (Road King) or FLHTCU (Ultra Classic Electra Glide) – to pick but a few of the variants – the presence of those twin initial letters tells you that it's designed to cover distances in comfort.
In fact "luxury" is closer to the mark. Harley-lovers call the company's touring family "sofas" but Habitat never made anything so sumptuous. To riders of modern European and Japanese touring machines, these Harleys resemble furniture trucks and threaten similar levels of agility.read more

A unanimous vote today by the NTSB recommends that every state create and enforce mandatory helmet laws for motorcycle riders and their passengers.
