Harley rides a hard road

Facing sluggish consumer spending and doubts about the economy, Harley-Davidson executives say they're expecting a difficult finish to the year and further challenges in 2008.Friday, Harley said its third-quarter U.S. motorcycle sales were down 2.5% from a year ago while the U.S. heavyweight motorcycle market fell 4.4% overall. Harley's overseas sales were up 8.8%, partly fueled by a weak U.S. dollar.

The company had anticipated that domestic sales would be sluggish, so it cut bike shipments and earnings expectations in September.

NEWS : Harley-Davidson 3Q Profit Falls 15.3 Pct

A continued sluggish U.S. market for motorcycles pushed Harley-Davidson Inc.'s third-quarter profit down 15.3 percent, and the motorcycle maker said it expects next year to be difficult, too.

Domestic buyers are seeing oil prices rising and the home market crumbling, so they're being cautious about spending, even when it comes to the iconic brand's bikes, Chief Executive Jim Ziemer said in an interview.
