harley-davidson reports third-quarter financial results

Revenue for the quarter was $1.54 billion compared to $1.64 billion in the year ago quarter, a 5.8 percent decrease. Net income for the quarter was $265.0 million compared to $312.7 million, a decrease of 15.3 percent versus the third quarter of 2006. Third quarter diluted earnings per share were $1.07, a 10.8 percent decrease compared to last year’s $1.20. During the third quarter the Company repurchased $509 million of its common stock.

“Harley-Davidson’s third quarter financial results are disappointing but not unexpected. In early September, we announced that we would reduce planned motorcycle shipments for the rest of 2007, and our results for the quarter are consistent with the Company’s revised guidance,” said Jim Ziemer, Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson.

Capel Announces Winners of Harley Giveaway

Richard and Diana Apgar of Middletown, Ohio, were winners of a Harley-Davidson Sportster XL 1200c motorcycle given away earlier this month at High Point Market by rug vendor Capel. The giveaway was part of Capel’s 90th Anniversary celebration this year.

The bike was on display at the Capel Showroom for the week of High Point market, and the raffle was open to all Capel showroom visitors from Sept. 30 to the afternoon of Oct. 5.

The Apgars both work for Interiors by Decorating Den, Diana as an interior designer, and Richard as an installer. Diana has used Capel rugs in many of her “Dream Room” contest photographs, as well as for Decorating Den advertisements and promotions.

Buying Harley Stock: Born To Be Wild?

I've initiated a position in Harley-Davidson. This is the first time I've owned this company, though I've watched it for years. As usual, there are near-term issues weighing on the stock, but I am happy to wait for their resolution.

I will have additional analysis in future posts, but this purchase is again about buying an amazing company on the cheap. As Morningstar notes in their analysis, how many companies do you know where its consumers are so loyal that they tattoo the company's logo on themselves (Nike is the only other I can think of)?

DeBary woman dies -- bike fest's lone fatality

The 52-year-old DeBary woman who was badly burned after her 1993 Harley-Davidson crashed Sunday has become the sole fatality during this year's Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach.

Law-enforcement officials said they almost got through the four-day motorcycle rally without anyone losing their lives a year after six people died in bike crashes -- the most in as many years.

Kriste Waters, a single mother of two teenage girls, smashed her glittery-blue bike into an oncoming car about 12:45 a.m. on the last day. She died at Orlando Regional Medical Center at 2:20 p.m., officials said.

Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE:HOG) released Q3 results last Friday (10/19) and said it expects its current "weakness" to persist into 2008. Shares of Harley have been treading water since announcing Q3 profit fell 15.3% due to weak sales of its motorcycles, so what's next?

Harley's Q3 07 U.S. Net income totaled $265 million, or $1.07 per share, compared with a profit of $312.7 million, or $1.20 per share, a year ago. Revenue dropped 5.8% to $1.54 billion from $1.64 billion last year. Worldwide retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles were flat in the quarter, down 0.2 percent and shipments were down 10.8% to 86,535 units. Domestically, sales were down 2.5%, while the overall U.S. heavyweight market fell 4.4%. International sales were up 8.8%.
