Motorcyclist killed in crash was running from police

Police said at a news conference today that only the motorcyclist can be blamed for the crash.

"Ultimately, everybody has to take responsibility for their own actions," El Paso Police Chief Richard Wiles said.

A police car dashboard video, which will be posted on elpasotimes.com shortly, shows a man on a motorcycle running south North Mesa from a police car with flashing lights. The police officer in the car soon calls off the pursuit and later finds the motorcycle on the ground near St. Patrick Cathedral.

A motorcyclist who minutes earlier had sped away from a pursuing police car was killed in a crash early Wednesday near Downtown El Paso, police said.

Cesar Muela, 30, of the 2700 block of Anise, died at the scene after crashing his 2006 Harley-Davidson into the rear of a car in the 900 block of North Mesa near St. Patrick Cathedral, police said.
