ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska requires motorcycle passengers to wear helmets. Right now they are optional for drivers -- but that could change.
Today the National Transportation Safety Board took the first step to require states to make helmets mandatory for all riders. The decision was sparked by a doubling of related deaths since 1997.
A unanimous vote today by the NTSB recommends that every state create and enforce mandatory helmet laws for motorcycle riders and their passengers.
