Long live the King

Although he died Aug. 16, 1977, in many ways Elvis has never left the building. Last year, more than 600,000 visitors passed through the gates of Graceland, Presley's Memphis mansion. According to Forbes magazine, his estate earned more than $42 million in 2006. In 2005, 19 of Elvis' singles were reissued in the United Kingdom. All reached the Top 5 on the national charts.
Death hasn't slowed Presley down.
Harley-Davidson is producing special-edition Elvis motorcycles. Talk about saturation: Even Reese's candy is getting into the game, with Elvis Peanut Butter & Banana Creme Cups in stores through December.

Buying tips for beginning bikers

Before heading off to major biker events, such as the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, S.D., novice bikers should visit dealers to determine what kind of bike they are most comfortable with, sport, touring, or cruiser.
"A lot of new riders, when they first approach the sport, they pick out a bike before they do the research. They look at a bike and say, 'I want one of those,' " said Tom Lindsay, spokesman for the American Motorcyclist Association. "It's not about falling in love with a bike. It's about making a choice that makes sense to you as a rider. It's like any other major purchase. It involves an expenditure, insurance, protecting your investment, and protecting yourself."
Most importantly, keep an open mind throughout the process.

BIKER'S HAVEN

Road-hog Harley-Davidson may soon have to start sharing the fast lane with Orange County Choppers - the upstate New York custom motorcycle builders who appear on the cable TV hit, "American Chopper."
At the moment, Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson, a publicly traded Fortune 500 company that posted more than $6.2 billion in sales last year, has little to fear from OCC.
But OCC's push to manufacture mass-produced motorcycles, a line of apparel and other OCC-branded items such as cups and waste baskets could eventually bring the nation's largest cycle manufacturer some level of competition.

Motorcycle fatalities have risen for 9 years

Last year, 4,810 bikers and passengers died on America's highways and byways. That's 234 more deaths than the 4,576 counted in 2005.
The last drop for motorcycle-related deaths came in 1997, with 2,116 deaths. That marked 45 fewer deaths than the previous year.
Motorcyclists and industry experts alike seek a reason for the disparity. There are no definitive answers, they say.
Only a comprehensive study of all motorcycle mishaps would provide a definitive reason for the increases in motorcycle fatalities, Tyson said. Until then, "anything we say would be pure speculation."

NHRA: Sunday Results - Force Records 125th Funny Car Victory

Three-time and reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle champ Hines got bragging rights over teammate Krawiec with his wire-to-wire job here. Hines left with a .034 to Krawiec's .091-second start and just rode away for his 11th career victory, winning with a 7.009 at 188.20 mph to Krawiec's 7.077 at 183.94 mph. Both men ride identical Screamin' Eagle Harley-Davidson V-Rods.

"It's always a great deal when you can run your teammate in the final," Hines said. "It doesn't matter who wins or loses because the team has already accomplished its goal. It's so tough to get one bike to the final round these days, let alone to get both of them there. It was a great day for the entire Screamin' Eagle Vance & Hines team."

Tech Ed: Avoiding the 'brand canyon'

Carbone says the Harley Davidson community is one that any brand manager would die for. But he says to create such a community, companies have to understand the role of the subconscious mind.
Carbone says companies have to move from "best practice" to "next practice". He quoted management guru Peter Drucker, who wrote that companies exist to create value and profit is their reward. He says this has become corrupted. Many companies believe they exist for profit and the means to this is extracting it from the customer.
He says when people talk about customer relationship management, they are mainly talking about data management, not relationship management. He cited his own experience of Northwest Airlines and its rewards scheme.

1970 Harley Davidson Ironhead Sportster Custom Motorcycle - Rock Star Bike Rehab

Some bikes have absolutely no story or character, but this one has so much it could fill its own magazine. Just in the last 13 years of its existence it's lived more than most bikes ever will, and nobody knows how it even got here. At some point in time it was a stock '60s (or '70s; we're not sure) ironhead. Sometime in the mid-'70s it gained a Paughco rigid frame, and in the 1980s it got the very new wave purple paint job, which is how owner Sean Kinney found it.
Fast forward 13 years. The bike is still in the storage space, laying on its side in a pool of its own oil with broken instruments piled on top of it. Forgotten, and worst of all, still ugly.
Sean sent it over to Huff Motorsports-who had worked on his machinery for years-to get it back in working order. Uber-builder (and former drag race star) Steve Huff did what he could to keep the bike in its New Wave glory, fixing the old parts instead of buying new ones, but the trouble was the same as before: the bike was still too frickan' ugly. So it sat at Huff's, with the occasional joyride by Steve or one of his cronies, for most of Seattle's short riding season.
This is where the bike's latest chapter begins.

2004 Harley Davidson Softail Deuce Custom Motorcycle - Free Reign

With unrestricted bike-building liberty comes an even greater factor: trust.
Colby might not have had free rein over this '04 H-D Softail Deuce had it not been for the friendship he developed with the bike's owner, Joe Wilkins. Joe owns a construction company and was contracted to build Anaheim-Fullerton Harley-Davidson (AFH-D) in Fullerton, CA. During the construction of the dealership, he became good buddies with Colby, the service manager there, as well as the dealer's owner, Tom Scott.
Colby had found out that Joe was unhappy with his custom bike and had sold it. Armed with this knowledge, Colby picked the Softail Deuce as a great platform to start. Since he was acting on Joe's behalf, Colby wanted to use something that was both a nice-looking and decent ride, not to mention easy and convenient to service. "I wanted it to look cool, but most importantly, be user-friendly from a mechanical and ridability standpoint," Colby remarked.

Harley-Davidson Rolls Out the '08 CVOs

The truly big news is that Harley has taken a big leap into 21st Century with the introduction of an Anti-lock Braking System on the CVO FL models and as an option on the Touring and VRSC models.
Further, H-D took the high road and separated the system front and rear, so there is none of the dreaded linked braking that mars a number of other ABS packages.
The Softail Springer is the hot rod of the bunch. Combining the nostalgia of the springer front-end and small headlight, they've gone and thrown on a forward-facing air cleaner ("Heavy Breather") for your stoplight-to-stoplight drag racing pleasure. read more
