Before heading off to major biker events, such as the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, S.D., novice bikers should visit dealers to determine what kind of bike they are most comfortable with, sport, touring, or cruiser.
"A lot of new riders, when they first approach the sport, they pick out a bike before they do the research. They look at a bike and say, 'I want one of those,' " said Tom Lindsay, spokesman for the American Motorcyclist Association. "It's not about falling in love with a bike. It's about making a choice that makes sense to you as a rider. It's like any other major purchase. It involves an expenditure, insurance, protecting your investment, and protecting yourself."
Most importantly, keep an open mind throughout the process.
