The city centre came to a standstill as the crowds packed the streets, many huddled under umbrellas to watch the 32nd Festival Cavalcade.
Organisers blamed the weather for reducing the audience numbers to half last year's total, but they were pleased it failed to stop tens of thousands flocking to watch the festival season come to life yesterday.
Dozens of police motorcycles kicked their engines into life and started the parade to resounding cheers from the crowd. They were followed by around 80 cyclists of TryCycling Edinburgh, Harley Davidson motorcycle riders and Scotia Wings.
